Getting comfortable with having an uncomfortable conversation.
Sex… it’s just not a fun conversation to have. It’s awkward. It’s unpleasant. It’s uncomfortable. But, it’s important that you become more comfortable with having these types of uncomfortable conversations.
Why? Because there is a good chance that the people you love and care about are at risk of contracting an STD. And, if you want to protect them, you need to be willing to sit them down and have an open, vulnerable conversation about sex.
Do you have a friend that drinks to black-out, screws everything that isn’t nailed down, won’t touch a condom with a 10 foot pole and has tried just about every drug known to man?
If so, it is time you take them out to coffee and inform them about the risks they are exposing themselves to. Don’t worry, this doesn’t make you nosey or backwards, it makes you a good caring friend.
How do you talk about sex and HIV?
The team here at Think Before You Sleep is wanting to make this conversation as easy as possible. So, we have taken the time to outline ways you can go about having this conversation with someone you care about.
Step 1: Pick out a quiet comfortable spot with some privacy.
Being that talking about sex can be both uncomfortable and extremely private, it’s a good idea to talk about it in a comfortable place that is both quiet and secluded. Perhaps at a secluded table located at the back of a coffee shop or during a nice long walk.
Step 2: Explain why you are bringing it up, before you bring it up.
“Mark, you have been my best friend for as long as I can remember and I love you like a brother. So, please understand that I am about to have this conversation with you because I care about you and your well-being. I have been doing a lot of reading lately on HIV and some of the risks that come along with sex. This has really worried me and I wanted to talk about it with you.”
Step 3: Offer to go get tested with him/ her. Take the pressure of them.
“Anyways, this got me thinking… why not just get tested so I can have some peace of mind. Would you want to go get tested with me?”
