Bringing Mental Health Awareness to the Community

Bringing Mental Health Awareness to the Community

On May 15, the Community Health Worker (CHW) Program partnered with PATH, a HIV Prevention Grant, and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) for a Mental Health Awareness Month outreach event in fort Worth that reminded us all of the power of showing up, according to Tracy Harris, CHW program director.

Set under a bright sky and a teal canopy, the CHW team engaged with more than 60 individuals from—offering conversation, education and connection around mental health, HIV/STI testing and substance use resources. It was a great day to be out in the community, and even greater to witness the honest, sometimes hard, but always hopeful conversations that took place.

The AHF mobile testing van joined the effort, providing free HIV testing and services on-site. Their support made it easier for individuals to take a brave step toward knowing their status and accessing care.

Whether someone needed mental health support, substance use resources or simply a listening ear, the CHW team was there—backed by the strength of MHMR Tarrant and our community partners. The team included: Tracy Harris, Colin Roeger, Kaleb Johnson, Ronnie Lopez, Jennifer Saldana, Jacinto Trevino, Anna Fennell, Christy McAfee, Yvette Carelock, Wendell Willis, Carrie Teal and Desiree Fanner.
